Description

The black Cochet trail is a demanding 8.8 km hike. The route alternates between forests, scree slopes, and ridgelines, offering spectacular views from at the summit. This trail is not recommended for inexperienced hikers or families with strollers.

The black Cochet trail starts at the Saint-Marcel dam.
From the parking area, the path climbs gradually through a dense forest, offering a pleasant ascent. After about 1.5 km, the trail crosses a scree field — a rocky section that requires caution and attention. The climb becomes steeper as you approach the summit. The Croix des Prisonniers, erected in 1955 in memory of 31 soldiers and prisoners of war, stands at 2,009 m of altitude. It offers an exceptional panoramic view over the Belleville Valley, Mont Blanc, and the surrounding mountain ranges. The terrain, made up of dirt and rocks, includes narrow and sometimes slippery sections. Good physical condition and experience in alpine hiking are required.
