Itinéraire raquettes - Plateau de la Croix / Porcherey

At the crossroads of the slopes in Saint-Gervais, Mont Joly and Saint Nicolas de Véroce, the Porcherey mountain pasture ensures a breathtaking panoramic view. Once a unique alpine pasture, these are now two separate locations designed to welcome hikers.

THE ORIGINS OF THE PORCHEREY NAME
Porcherey can mean both pig and wild boar and in summer pastures, the domestic animals made just as much damage as the wild ones. When the animals would be out summer pasturing, their snout was fitted with a metal ring to keep them from digging and damaging the prairie.

At the Plan (or plateau) de la Croix, a steep but short climb joins a ski trail, which you'll soon have to leave at the 1st bend to enter the forest. The flat path leads to some chalets - note the old snowshoes decorating the wall.
A fork offers a loop via Porcherey Devant or Derrière.
Via Porcherey Derrière: a small track winds its way up through the diverse forest, where you come across numerous animal tracks; “shh”, they're at home here!
Crossing more open areas, you can admire the Mont Blanc range, gradually emerging from the forest, the layer of snow thickening and an immense white landscape appearing.

Avoid the ski slopes, as you'll be walking on “snow dunes”!
You can see the Porcherey cross, and make a detour towards the inn and the arrival of the slopes leading down from Mont Joly.
