Lecture: “The Ceutrons, those Alpine Gauls” by Julien Pelloux

Julien Pelloux, mountain guide with the Saint-Gervais/Les Contamines guide company and historian, talks about the Ceutrons, Celtic herders from the Alps.

From the end of the Bronze Age until the invasion of the Roman Empire, the Montjoie Valley was inhabited by a Gallic nation: the Ceutrons. This independent Celtic people occupied the Tarentaise Valley, Beaufortain, Val-Montjoie, Val d'Arly, and Chamonix Valley, establishing their capital at Axima (Aime-la-Plagne) on the banks of the Isère River. They were mainly herders who participated in and facilitated trade across mountain passes such as the Petit Saint-Bernard and Bonhomme. During this lecture, “The Ceutrons, Mountain Gauls,” we will attempt to explore the history and way of life of these mountain peoples who were responsible for the occupation and exploitation of our mountains.
