Stones in Cups

The etymology of the word "cup" refers to the Latin "small cut", it is said about cavities carved on prehistoric rocks or megalithic vestiges.

Their origin is assigned to the phenomena of mechanical and chemical erosion due to the almost permanent presence of rainwater or runoff. Stagnant water contained in the cavities has a very low pH and therefore has a corrosive action. By this extremely slow process, several neighboring cups may meet in the end: they became "coalescent cups".
