Chapelle Saint-Marcel-Saint-Grégoire (Chapel)
Description
This chapel, located in a large hamlet in a vast valley, resembles a genuine little church. With its renovated altar piece and colourful statues it bears silent witness to the ancient history of Les Belleville.
Les Belleville is a vast village, extending over some 22,000 hectares and with no fewer than 22 hamlets! Saint-Marcel is the most important, both in terms of the number of inhabitants and its geographical location: it was the valley's first capital town! During the 15th century, it was called Grand'Belleville, "Belleville" originally referring to a large, rural estate. The vast chapel is dedicated to both Saint Marcel-de-la-Croix - a pope and martyr from Roman times - and Saint Grégoire-le-Grand - also pope and a great defender of the Christian faith. The building, references to which date back to the 13th century, has been modified many times over the centuries but its current aspect suggests a 17th century construction. Its sacristy conceals one final secret where the remains of 15th century frescoes reveal the work of artists through the ages!
